If you’ve been following The Sana Co for a while now you’ve probably got some knowledge around the importance of ‘detox’ when it comes to clearing skin, specifically acne. What do I mean by detox? To put it simply, this is the process of how our body gets rid of stuff that shouldn’t stick around, and we want it to work effectively! This is, ironically, done via our skin, digestive organs, liver, kidneys, lungs and lymphatic system. Our body will always naturally tend towards eliminating toxins, but it’s important to have the knowledge on the choices we’re making that may be hindering or helping.

Things to increase:
- Hydration: Aiming for 2-3L of filtered water a day. This helps move our lymphatic system and stimulates stomach acid.
- Regular exercise: Stimulates circulation, lymph movement and digestion. If you’re unable to exercise, sweating with the use of saunas is also an excellent way to do the same thing.
- Liver-loving veg: Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, garlic, cauliflower, silver beet, beetroot.
- High fibre foods: Aiming for 25-30g/day, including foods like chia seeds, flaxseeds, rolled oats, quinoa, barley, sweet potatoes with skin on, legumes, raspberries and avocado.
Things to minimise:
- Alcohol: of course we’re all going to have boozy nights on special events, but on a whole keep those nights to max once a month, as unfortunately, all of our detox organs will not be happy ☹
- Smoking, vaping, other exposure to chemicals: Limiting if not completely cutting out your body’s exposure to chemicals will impact HUGELY! I’m talking fragrances in perfumes, cosmetics, household cleaners, poor air quality etc.
- Highly processed foods: This often comes hand in hand with ready-made, packaged foods. Things with lots of numbers, weird names you can’t pronounce or brightly coloured; they’re just not real food.Want to get to the root of your acne?
